Fish Camp Participant Assessment - Summer 2022 | According to its website (http://fishcamp.tamu.edu/mission/), Fish Camp strives to “welcome freshmen into the Aggie Family by sharing the traditions and values of Texas A&M University and building long-term relationships that embody the Aggie spirit.” Fish Camp operates as a student organization and is housed in the Department of Student Activities. This year, eight sessions were held in person from July 23rd through August 9th, 2022. Fish Camp used to be a four-day camp at Lakeview Methodist Conference Center in Palestine, TX. However, starting in 2021, and continuing in 2022, Fish Camp was shortened to three days. Fish Camp leaders and advisors wanted to understand the participants’ camp experience and how Fish Camp affected, if at all, the start of the fall semester for those who attended. This year, eight sessions were held in person from July 25th through August 17th, 2021. Fish Camp is typically a four-day camp at Lakeview Methodist Conference Center in Palestine, TX. However, this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Fish Camp was three days to allow one day between each camp for cleaning. Fish Camp wanted to understand the participants’ camp experience and how Fish Camp affected, if at all, the start of the fall semester for those who attended. Venture Camps Participant Evaluation - 2021 | Venture Camps are extended orientation programs for admitted entering freshmen or transfer students starting in the fall semester. During the camp experience, students participate in a variety of outdoor activities and take part in Discussion Groups (DGs) to discuss college life at Texas A&M and campus traditions. This year two different camp experiences were offered to incoming students. Venture: Base Camp Backpacking was July 6-9, 2021, and Venture: Base Camp Paddling was July 13-16, 2021. Staff planning the Venture Camp programs wanted to understand the students’ experiences with the Venture Camp programs and how effective they were in reaching the identified outcomes. This was the sixth year of the program and Student Activities and Recreational Sports working with Student Life Studies to assess the effectiveness of the camp experience. Howdy Week Assessment 2021 | Howdy Week is a series of events held just before the fall semester to welcome primarily new students to campus and is coordinated by New Student and Family Programs (NSFP) in the Offices of the Dean of Student Life. Howdy Week 2021 was August 22-29, 2021, and included a combination of virtual, hybrid, and in-person events. NSFP wanted to understand the event coordinators’ experience, specifically with the process to submit events for Howdy Week and how organizations find out about submitting events. Additionally, NSFP wanted to assess students’ experiences with Howdy Week. T-Camp 2021 Counselor/Teamer/Co-Chair and Camper Surveys - Aggie Transition Camps (ATC) | The purpose of this assessment was to understand the experiences of students who participated in T-Camp. T-Camp, sponsored by Aggie Transition Camps (ATC), is an extended (three-day) optional orientation camp for students who are transferring to Texas A&M University. There were two sessions held, from August 2 through August 8. Following the camps, one survey was sent to co-chairs, counselors, and teamers, and a few weeks into the semester another survey was sent to participants (campers) to assess their camp experience. Graduate & Professional Student Government Grad Camp Fall 2021 | Graduate and Professional Student Government (GPSG) sponsored one virtual session and one in-person session of Grad Camp held on August 18th and August 25th, 2021. GPSG worked with Student Life Studies since 2001 to assess the experiences of counselors and the campers who attend Grad Camp. Traditions Night | The Department of Student Activities, Extended Orientation, in collaboration with Texas A&M Athletics, hosted Traditions Night on August 25, 2021 for incoming Texas A&M student-athletes. Student Life Studies collaborated with the Department of Student Activities to assess the participating students’ experiences with Traditions Night. Live@Noon: A Summer Series 2020 | New Student and Family Programs (NSFP) in the Offices of the Dean of Student Life sponsored Live@Noon: A Summer Series, a summer series of virtual book discussions with faculty and fellow students, open to all new students. This program replaced previous years’ in-person Summer Reading programs held during Howdy Week. Live@Noon: A Summer Series outcomes were to help new students acclimate themselves to the virtual college classroom experience, learn to interact with professors and meet fellow freshmen about to attend Texas A&M University. Participants were surveyed in early September to assess their experiences and gain their feedback regarding the value of the program to them. ATC T Camp 2020 | The purpose of this assessment was to understand the experience of students who participated in T Camp. Due to COVID-19 restrictions on gatherings, this fall two sessions of T Camp were held virtually; session one was held August 3 through August 5, and session two was held August 7 through August 9. One survey was sent to co-chairs, counselors, and teamers a few weeks into the semester, and T Camp participants (campers) were sent a different survey to measure their camp experience. This year Howdy Camp was held January 3-5, 2020. Fish Camp Non-Participant Survey - Fall 2023 | Fish Camp, an optional extended orientation camp, provides a transition from high school to college for approximately 6,000 incoming freshmen. Fish Camp has assessed different aspects of the program since 2000.
