The Memorial Student Center (MSC) Freshmen in Service and Hosting (FISH) is dedicated to aiding freshmen in the development of leadership, integrity, purpose, identity, and independence while fostering personal relationships. The MSC FISH structure contains eight “schools,” which are smaller groups of freshmen led by upperclassmen. Members also have the opportunity to serve on one of four subcommittees to help plan and implement a variety of programs and projects. Through these subcommittees and schools, the MSC FISH staff helps freshmen become acquainted with the campus and community while serving as mentors.
The MSC FISH leadership team developed learning outcomes in the fall of 2011 for each level of membership within the organization and this year’s assessments focused on outcomes for freshman. The attached summarizes the results of that assessment.
The Memorial Student Center (MSC) Freshmen Leadership International (FLI) coordinates one major international travel experience for its members each year over spring break. MSC FLI went to Costa Rica again this year from March 7-13, 2020 for this international travel experience. MSC FLI indicated the following outcomes for participants:
• Participants demonstrate a willingness to step out of their comfort zone to try something new.
• Participants use reflection as a tool to examine their leadership skills and privilege in a global context.
• Participants experience teamwork within a diverse group of peers.
• Participants will explore, question, and empathize with other cultures.
Trip participants were assessed at different points during the experience to gauge how well the outcomes were met and the overall impact of this experience. Student Life Studies has worked with MSC FLI to assess this Costa Rica trip since 2013.

The Memorial Student Center (MSC) has been the student union at Texas A&M University since 1951. In addition to being a building on campus, the MSC is also a department in the Division of Student Affairs providing students with academic, cultural awareness and arts programs. The MSC Student Programs Office provides leadership development opportunities for students involved in any of the 19 committees or various trips and service experiences.The MSC keeps track of many former students who were involved in MSC committees and leadership opportunities. The department leadership wanted to understand the impact of the MSC leadership experience after they graduate, specifically related to the institution’s undergraduate learning outcomes. The attached summary report provides the results of the assessment conducted in Spring 2017.
The Memorial Student Center (MSC) offices (Box Office, OPAS, Student Programs Office or SPO) developed student learning outcomes for their student employees for the 2015-2016 academic year focused on active listening as a component of the Texas A&M University learning outcome for undergraduates of demonstrating effective communication. During the MSC student employee retreat held in August, students were asked to identify major components of active listening (identified as pay attention, show you are listening, provide feedback, defer judgement and respond appropriately) and choose one on which to focus during the 2015-2016 academic year. Supervisors then met with their students throughout the year to gauge progress and ensure students were still focused on improving their chosen component. The MSC supervisors wanted to evaluate the student employees’ learning regarding this outcome and contacted Student Life Studies (SLS) to help create an assessment, and decided on a near end- of- term focus group, which would include approximately 50% of the MSC student employees. The attached report summarizes the findings of the MSC Focus Groups.
The Memorial Student Center (MSC) provides leadership development opportunities for students through its 16 programming committees and six resource areas. Each includes student officers who bring higher levels of experience to lead the committees and resource areas. The MSC wanted to more fully understand the MSC officer student experience and measure their learning within their officer role as it relates to the Texas A&M undergraduate learning outcome of working collaboratively. The attached report summarizes the results of the analysis of the learning assessed as result of these MSC Officers experiences during the 2015-2016 academic year.
The Memorial Student Center (MSC) Student Conference on National Affairs (SCONA) was founded in 1955 in order to bring national and foreign policy issues to Texas A&M University.The theme for SCONA 63 was “New World Disorder: Reconsidering America’s Roles, Responsibilities and Relationships” and was held February 15-17, 2018. The conference, which brings together delegates from all over the world, was assessed using a paper survey in effort to gauge the delegates' experiences with the conference. The attached report summarizes the results of the survey.
The mission of the Becky Gates Children’s Center (BGCC) “…is to provide an exemplary, affordable, accessible early childhood education program for the children of students, staff, and faculty affiliated with Texas A&M University” (http://bgcc.tamu.edu/mission-and-goals/ ). The BGCC provides services to a diverse group of children and parents/guardians. Yearly, a parent/guardian evaluation survey is sent out in an effort to evaluate and continue to provide high quality services to children and parents/guardians. The survey was designed to assess both the overall quality of the center, parent/guardian perspectives of the inquiry-based curriculum and the individual classrooms at the BGCC. The attached report summarizes the results of the survey sent out in reference to the 2016-2017 school year.
The mission of the Department of Multicultural Services Tutoring Program is to facilitate student academic success by providing personalized academic assistance and course-specific peer tutoring to assist students in the development of study skills essential to success in coursework. The attached report summarizes the results of the satisfaction survey sent to those students who utilized DMS tutoring services throughout the academic year
The MSC is the student union programming area at Texas A&M University and is responsible for providing leadership development opportunities for students and services to student organizations and the entire university population. The MSC staff wanted to gather feedback from the student body to identify students’ interests and needs regarding campus programs, understand students’ preferences for scheduling, costs, and marketing campus programs, and to gauge students’ awareness of the MSC committees. The MSC worked with Student Life Studies on similar projects in 2011 and 2013.
The MSC Spencer Leadership Conference focuses on leadership development through the exploration of three pillars: Self-Aware Leadership, Innovative Leadership, and Selfless Leadership. Held in Dallas, approximately 44 student delegates attend programs and small group discussions featuring leaders in business, industry, education and public service. The following report summarizes the results of a survey intended to measure the delegates learning and satisfaction from attending the conference.
The MSC Student Conference on Latino Affairs (SCOLA) sponsors a conference yearly and this year's conference occurred on April 5-7 2018, and its theme was Influential Voices: Shaping Perspective through Representation. The conference featured five keynote speakers and 15 workshops. The goal of the conference was to explore how one can grow as an individual and a professional while maintaining and fostering one’s identity/culture. Delegates attend the MSC SCOLA conference from colleges and universities from all over the country. The attached report is a summary of the results of the conference evaluation completed by delegates at the conference.
The Office of Consensual Language, Education, Awareness, and Relationship (CLEAR), within the Offices of the Dean of Student Life, promotes a campus culture of respectful communication and consent by connecting students to resources and facilitating authentic dialogues on healthy relationships and preventing power-based personal violence.The CLEAR Office hosted three Sexual Harassment and Rape Prevention (SHARP) classes between August 24, 2016 and January 10, 2017 in collaboration with the University Police Department and the Brazos County Sheriff’s Office. Attached summarizes the results of the survey provided to those who attend in effort to gauge their experiences at the workshop.
The purpose of the Spring Leadership Exchange is to allow Texas A&M students from the Qatar and College Station campuses to share diverse cultures, perspectives, and experiences with one another while learning together about leadership in a global society. The assessment was to determine the effectiveness in reaching this purpose.
The Recreation Center (Rec Center) wanted to gather some information from students relating to their satisfaction of the Rec Center facility spaces and equipment, and interactions with their staff. More specifically, the Rec Center staff wanted to measure the satisfaction level with facility spaces since the expansion/renovation project was completed, to learn where improvements to operations can be made to make students' experiences at the Rec Center more enjoyable. The attached report summarizes the results of the survey sent to students to assess their satisfaction with the aforementioned aspects of the Rec Center.
