11th Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast

The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Breakfast is an annual program sponsored by MSC WBAC. This program is a “formal way to reflect on the life, legacy, and accomplishments of Dr. King to make his legacy relevant for the university, its students, faculty, and administration.” This year’s event was scheduled on January 18, 2018 and hosted Kevin Powell as the speaker. This was the eleventh year of this annual program and the sixth year Student Life Studies worked with MSC WBAC for their program assessment.

AFAM and Aggie Familia Fall Semester Reflection

The Department of Residence Life was initially awarded a Division of Student Affairs College Completion Grant for the 2016-2017 academic year to create a support network for under-represented students living on-campus, specifically Black/African-American and Hispanic/Latino students. This grant was renewed for the 2017-2018 academic year. Following from the Aggie family ideal, the Black/African-American group was referred to as AFAM and the Hispanic/Latino group was named Aggie Familia.

As part of the grant, identity-conscious programs and mentoring opportunities are planned throughout the 2017-2018 academic year for these student populations. Programs include topics such as academic connections, money management, stress management, and finishing the semester strong. Through these events, AFAM and Aggie Familia students will be connected with faculty, staff, and other students to establish and build a community with people, programs, and resources. The planning committee coordinated an End-of-Semester Celebration for the students in both groups, which was held on December 5, 2017. The event included a keynote speaker, time to socialize/network with students and mentors, and the opportunity to reflect on the fall semester.

The grant planning committee worked with Student Life Studies to collect data from students reflecting on their semester. While other assessments have been conducted as part of the Aggie Familia/AFAM initiative, this was the first time this specific event or reflection was assessed.

AFAM and Aggie Familia Money Management Workshop

The Money Management Center was invited to present a money management workshop, which took place on October 24, 2017.

The grant planning committee worked with Student Life Studies to understand students’ experience of this workshop. While other assessments have been conducted as part of the Aggie Familia/AFAM initiative, this was the first time the Money Management workshop was assessed.

The Academic Peer Mentors within Residence Life presented a workshop for the AFAM and Aggie Familia students on preparing for tests or their upcoming finals; which took place on November 29, 2017.

Aggie Up! Noise Abatement Course - 2016-2017

Off-Campus Student Services (OCSS) in the Offices of the Dean of Student Life created a three-hour class for off campus Texas A&M students who have been found in violation of College Station’s noise ordinances. The course was developed in conjunction with the police department, OCSS, Student Conduct Office in Student Life, the Texas A&M Student Government Association, and the municipal court. A College Station judge can assign the course as an option for first-time violators. The workshop curriculum includes discussion of the city codes, seeing the issues from another’s perspective, being a good neighbor, conflict management, and party planning skills.

Assessment Training Series - 2016-2017

To assess the session participants to understand the effectiveness of the workshops and the intended learning outcomes for each workshop. For the 2016-2017 academic year, eight
workshops were held covering the following topics: using assessment tools; Qualtrics training (presented each semester); documenting student learning; practical statistics; sharing assessment results; using assessment results; and connecting plans.

Campus-Wide Survey for University Police Department

The Texas A&M University Police Department (UPD) is required to survey “citizens” as a part of national accreditation requirements with International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA). UPD surveys the campus community on a regular basis to gather input from the community, identify and improve practices, and address attitudes that might contribute to tension and grievances. The process for gathering that information can be determined by the department.

Client Focus Groups, Summer 2016

One of Student Life Studies' goals is to provide quality assessment services to facilitate client planning and decision-making. To measure this goal and associated outcomes, the department conducted focus groups with clients to understand the effectiveness and quality of the services provided. Focus groups are conducted every three years; this assessment summary reports the results of the focus groups conducted in the summer of 2016.

Customer Satisfaction Survey-DoIT Customer Support

The report details the results of a customer satisfaction survey sent to customers who contacted the help (service) desk of the Department of Information Technology within the Division of Student Affairs in the 2016-2017 academic year. Intent was to measure the satisfaction level of customers of the help desk regarding their interactions with both student techs who work the Service Desk, and full time, professional staff who assist with troubleshooting and problem solving of issues brought through the help (service) desk.

Grad Camp 2017

The Graduate and Professional Student Council (GPSC) sponsor Grad Camp every fall that brings together new graduate students for a once in a lifetime learning and network experience in Aggieland. GPSC held two Grad Camps in the fall of 2017; August 17 and August 24, 2017. The summary report provides the results of the assessment of campers during both Grad Camp, and the counselors who participated in the program.

Group RecXercise Fitness Classes

Recreational Sports offers a variety of exercise classes to members. Most of the attendees are students, but faculty, staff, spouses, and community members can also join with a membership fee. Each class is taught by a trained instructor. Classes are offered at a variety of times during the day and week. Department staff wanted to assess the exercise classes to address concerns and make improvements.

Housing Fair - Fall 2017

Off-Campus Student Services (OCSS) in the Offices of the Dean of Student Life at Texas A&M University hosts the annual Housing Fair. According to the OCSS website, during Housing Fair “off campus properties present information about their properties to Texas A&M students, faculty and staff. Students can walk around and visit the various properties’ tables and gather informational materials, as well as pick up the latest copy of the Off-Campus Survival Manual.” This event has traditionally been held during the spring semester; however, due to feedback from previous years the annual Housing Fair was moved to the fall semester and held on October 25th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Memorial Student Center. OCSS wanted to assess both the students’ experience attending Housing Fair and the vendors (properties) who set up booths during the fair.
