AFAM and Aggie Familia Money Management Workshop

The Department of Residence Life was initially awarded a Division of Student Affairs College Completion Grant for the 2016-2017 academic year to create a support network for under-represented students living on-campus, specifically Black/African-American and Hispanic/Latino students. This grant was renewed for the 2017-2018 academic year. Following from the Aggie family ideal, the Black/African-American group was referred to as AFAM and the Hispanic/Latino group was named Aggie Familia.

As part of the grant, identity-conscious programs and mentoring opportunities are planned throughout the 2017-2018 academic year for these student populations. Programs include topics such as academic connections, money management, stress management, and finishing the semester strong. Through these events, AFAM and Aggie Familia students will be connected with faculty, staff, and other students to establish and build a community with people, programs, and resources. The Money Management Center was invited to present a money management workshop, which took place on October 24, 2017.

The grant planning committee worked with Student Life Studies to understand students’ experience of this workshop. While other assessments have been conducted as part of the Aggie Familia/AFAM initiative, this was the first time the Money Management workshop was assessed.

The Academic Peer Mentors within Residence Life presented a workshop for the AFAM and Aggie Familia students on preparing for tests or their upcoming finals; which took place on November 29, 2017.

The grant planning committee worked with Student Life Studies to understand students’ experience of this workshop. While other assessments have been conducted as part of the Aggie Familia/AFAM initiative, this was the first time this specific workshop was assessed.

Satellite Facility Needs Assessment Fall 2017

The Department of Recreational Sports maintains a more than 400,000 square foot facility visited by thousands of students, faculty, staff, and family members each year. The Rec Center (or “The Rec”) includes a weight and fitness room with over 32,000 square feet after renovation, which was completed at the end of 2016. The Rec Center also includes indoor track, handball/racquetball/squash courts, an indoor climbing wall, dance/activity rooms for classes, a natatorium, an outdoor activity area, equipment check out, locker rooms, and gymnasium spaces that can be divided for basketball, volleyball, badminton, and soccer. Staff from the Rec Center wanted to gather some information from students regarding a proposed building of an additional satellite recreational facility on campus. More specifically, the Rec Center staff wanted to gauge student opinion regarding the building of the satellite facility and its accompanying fee increase, as even with the most current expansion and renovation of the Rec Center, there is concern that it cannot meet the needs of the growing student population. The attached report provides a summary of the results of that needs assessment.

Group RecXercise Fitness Classes

Recreational Sports offers a variety of exercise classes to members. Most of the attendees are students, but faculty, staff, spouses, and community members can also join with a membership fee. Each class is taught by a trained instructor. Classes are offered at a variety of times during the day and week. Department staff wanted to assess the exercise classes to address concerns and make improvements.

Howdy Week 2017

Howdy Week is coordinated by New Student & Family Programs in the Offices of the Dean of Student Life and takes place just before the fall semester at Texas A&M University. This week is full of events and opportunities for new and returning students to become familiar or reacquainted with the Texas A&M University campus, fellow Aggies, and the Bryan/College Station community. Howdy Week was held August 20-27, 2017. Howdy Week staff wanted to capture assessment data about students’ experiences attending different activities from the week, specifically the Class of 2021 Photo, the Faculty Reading Program, and Howdy Week Coordinators of signature events.

Venture: Base Camp 2017 Participant Evaluation

There were two sessions of Venture: Base Camp over the summer. The first one, Alpha, took place on July 10 – 15, 2017 and Bravo, the second camp, was scheduled July 17 – 22, 2017. During this six-day camp, students went rock climbing, swimming, and canoeing; had discussion groups; learned about Aggie traditions; and took a campus tour/scavenger hunt. This was the third year of the program and the third time to work with Student Life Studies to assess the effectiveness of the camp experience.

Aggie Up! Noise Abatement Course - 2016-2017

Off-Campus Student Services (OCSS) in the Offices of the Dean of Student Life created a three-hour class for off campus Texas A&M students who have been found in violation of College Station’s noise ordinances. The course was developed in conjunction with the police department, OCSS, Student Conduct Office in Student Life, the Texas A&M Student Government Association, and the municipal court. A College Station judge can assign the course as an option for first-time violators. The workshop curriculum includes discussion of the city codes, seeing the issues from another’s perspective, being a good neighbor, conflict management, and party planning skills.

Student Life Studies Customer Service Surveys 2016-2017

According to its website, Student Life Studies “provides leadership in assessment and planning to the Division of Student Affairs and to student organizations, maximizing program effectiveness and emphasizing student learning.” Furthermore, the vision of the department is to “create a culture in the Division of Student Affairs that values meaningful assessment, uses results to guide improvement, and articulates contributions to student success.” One goal for Student Life Studies is to provide quality assessment services to facilitate client planning and decision-making. Student Life Studies wanted to assess clients who utilized the department’s services to understand their satisfaction and use of assessment results in making program improvements. Student Life Studies has conducted various forms of a client assessment since 2005.

PAVE Team Lead and Peer Adviser Learning Outcomes Assessment 2016-2017

Peer Advisers for Veteran Education (PAVE) is a peer support program that connects incoming student veterans with student veterans already on campus in order to help them navigate college life. This summary report documents the assessment of learning of the 2016-2017 PAVE peer advisers and team leads from their participation in the program, specifically in the areas of interpersonal and written communication.

PAVE Team Lead and Peer Advisor Learning Outcomes Assessment 2016-2017

Peer Advisors for Veteran Education (PAVE) is a “peer support program that connects incoming student veterans with student veterans already on campus in order to help them navigate college life, identify challenges they are facing, refer them to appropriate resources on or off campus, and provide ongoing support to their academic and personal ventures.” The PAVE program originated as a collaboration between the University of Michigan Depression Center and the Department of Psychiatry, and the Student Veterans of America. The Texas A&M University Veterans Resource and Support Center (VRSC) started offering student veterans the PAVE program in 2014. In the 2016-2017 academic year, over 120 student veterans participated, linked to approximately 15 Peer Advisors who assisted these incoming student veterans. Additionally, Peer Advisors were assigned one of three Team Leads, who were responsible for the management, coordination and training of their assigned Peer Advisors.

In 2016 PAVE was designated as a Division of Student Affairs High Impact Practice (HIP) for the participating Peer Advisors and Team Leads. The VRSC contacted Student Life Studies to provide assistance in assessing the defined learning outcome and the reflection exercise for the Peer Advisors and Team Leads. Rubrics were developed to measure interpersonal and written communication skills, adapted from the Texas A&M University Division of Student Affairs Student Leader Learning Outcomes (SLLO) project interpersonal and written communication rubrics. The attached report summarizes the results of the assessment activities completed by the Peer Advisors and Team Leads.

Spring Leadership Exchange - 2017

The purpose of the Spring Leadership Exchange is to allow Texas A&M students from the Qatar and College Station campuses to share diverse cultures, perspectives, and experiences with one another while learning together about leadership in a global society. The assessment was to determine the effectiveness in reaching this purpose.

To assess the session participants to understand the effectiveness of the workshops and the intended learning outcomes for each workshop. For the 2016-2017 academic year, eight
workshops were held covering the following topics: using assessment tools; Qualtrics training (presented each semester); documenting student learning; practical statistics; sharing assessment results; using assessment results; and connecting plans.
